Q: What regulations apply to Rainwater Harvesting in Texas?
A:
HB4-Sec.341.042 STANDARDS FOR HARVESTED RAINWATER establishes recommended standards for domestic use of rainwater and part (b) states: "The commission by rule shall provide that if a structure is connected to a public water supply system and has a rainwater harvesting system for indoor use: (1) the structure must have appropriate cross-connection safeguards; and (2) the rainwater harvesting system may be used only for non-potable indoor purposes."
This law was to come up for revision during the 2009 legislative session but died without discussion or vote. If this issue is important to you, contact your state representatives.

Q: How much rain can my roof collect?
A: Roughly 600 gallons are collected off each 1000 square foot of area during a one inch rain.

Q: How can the water be used?
A: Rainwater is suitable for landscape, toilet flushing and laundry with only particle filtration. For domestic potable use, ultraviolet purification is recommended. For public buildings, a ultrafiltration and UV or ozonation is required.

Q: How big should my tank be?
A: Typically you should store a minimum of two or three month's average use and up to one-fifth of the average annual yield for your collection area.
